Bricks

Western's beautiful campus contains many bricked walkways and plazas used primarily by pedestrians. That use has been a driving force to improve our bricked areas of campus, though much work remains.

The Central Health and Safety Committee conducted a walk of the bricked areas of campus in 2001. Participants included the Associated Students' committee representative and administrative departments on campus. Western's equal opportunity specialist evaluated access for those who may be differently-abled as part of the process.

In 2002, the committee developed a priority list of bricked areas, enhancing an earlier set of priorities developed in 1998.

The University obtained funding for the 2001-2003 biennium to level and improve the bricked area on the Performing Arts Plaza near the MainStage entrance. This project was accomplished in 2002.

Funding for improvements to bricked areas was received for the 2003-2005 biennium. Completed projects included bricks in the following areas:

  • Performing Arts Plaza - 2nd Phase away from the MainStage entrance
  • Humanities Building - Fraser Hall area

The entrance to Gym B at Carver Gymnasium was updated separately from this process in 2003.

Funding to improve bricked areas was received for the 2005-2007 biennium in August 2005. A project to improve bricks between the Science, Math and Technology Education Building and Carver Gymnasium is scheduled for this biennium.
