Campus Exterior Lighting

Improvements to exterior lighting on campus have been an on-going effort to enhance the safety of students walking at night, especially during winter months.

In 1996, the Associated Students board participated with many administrative departments and governance units in a 'lighting walk' of the campus hosted by the Central Health and Safety.

The purpose of several days of walking was to identify areas needing additional lighting. Areas identified were prioritized and funding was secured for improvements during each biennium. Lighting and path improvement projects have occurred around campus, for example, on the ridge trail between Buchanan Towers and Fairhaven.

In 2001, Associated Students members participated in another lighting walk. The results of that walk were prioritized by the Central Health and Safety Committee with the highest priority being residential students' safety.

Several projects to improve exterior lighting were completed in 2003. These included:

  • Ridgeway - northern path ending at Carver Gymnasium
  • Ridgeway - middle path ending at the Carver-SMATE bicycle racks
  • Ridgeway - south path ending at the track
  • South campus - trail through parking areas
  • South campus - ridge trail between Buchanan Towers and Fairhaven
  • Central Campus near Arntzen and Carver Gym

Funding for the 2005-2007 biennium includes additional exterior lighting improvements.
