Crosswalks on Public Streets by Campus

Public streets are part of the infrastructure of the City of Bellingham. This includes the installation and maintenance of crosswalks. The City's Public Works Department handles these issues.

The Central Health and Safety Committee met with the City's Public Works Transportation Planner in 2003 to discuss crosswalks and pedestrian safety for our campus community.

The City re-painted several crosswalks in 2003 on both High Street and Bill MacDonald Parkway.

In 2003, the crosswalk at Garden and Cedar Streets was moved to the north. Access to the University is now at the Viking Union crosswalk on Garden Street. The City provided improved curbing, lighting and crosswalk identification.

In 2003, the University blocked access at Cedar Street to the exterior stairs leading to the core of campus. Additional improvements to remove the exterior stairs at Cedar Street are planned for 2005-2006.

This joint approach improved visibility and made the crossing safer.
